Include Target Quantities and Annual Volumes in Your RFQ

A well-prepared Request for Quote (RFQ) is one of the most important steps in any manufacturing project. However, many RFQs omit one critical piece of information: expected production volume. Without knowing the target order size or annual demand, manufacturers are forced to estimate pricing and process selection based on incomplete data, which often leads to inaccurate quotes and inefficient production planning.

Production volume directly influences nearly every manufacturing decision. For example, a part required in quantities of ten units might be best produced through CNC machining, while the same component needed in tens of thousands of units could justify casting or injection molding. Without volume clarity, suppliers cannot determine the most cost-effective process or tooling strategy.

Volume expectations also affect lead time, raw material procurement, and capacity planning. Manufacturers need to understand whether they are preparing for a one-time prototype build or a recurring production program. Providing these details upfront allows them to optimize scheduling, allocate resources efficiently, and provide more accurate pricing structures.

From an engineering perspective, volume information also enables smarter design recommendations. A manufacturer may suggest modifying geometry, selecting a different material, or transitioning to another process if they understand the scale of production early on. These adjustments can dramatically reduce costs and improve manufacturability.

Including target quantities and annual volumes in every RFQ ensures transparency between the customer and the supplier. This simple step leads to more realistic quotes, better process selection, and ultimately a smoother transition from prototype to production.
