Product schedules are often built around visible activities: design, tooling, sampling, validation, and production. But one of the most important stages receives much less attention, the transfer of information between the teams responsible for each of those activities.
A design team can finish its work on schedule and still create a delayed program if manufacturing receives incomplete drawings. Sourcing can select a supplier quickly, but production can still stall if critical process requirements were never communicated. Quality teams may discover that inspection criteria are unclear only after samples arrive. In each case, execution may be fast within individual departments while the overall program loses time between them.
These gaps create hidden iterations. Questions move back to engineering, drawings are revised, suppliers requote work, tooling decisions are reconsidered, and samples may need to be produced again. A schedule that appeared to contain one development cycle can quietly become two or three because information was incomplete at the moment responsibility changed hands.
Strong handoffs require more than sending the latest CAD file. The receiving team needs a controlled package containing the relevant drawings, tolerances, materials, finishes, critical-to-quality features, manufacturing assumptions, revision status, validation requirements, and any decisions that could affect how the product is built.
The objective is continuity of design intent. Every team should understand not only what it is receiving, but which requirements cannot change and which areas still allow manufacturing flexibility. When that information moves cleanly from design to sourcing, manufacturing, and quality, teams spend less time recovering lost context and more time executing the actual program.
