When a Design Needs Explaining, It Becomes a Sourcing Risk

A manufacturable design should communicate its critical requirements without depending on repeated conversations between the engineering team and the supplier. Geometry, tolerances, GD&T, materials, finishes, inspection requirements, and functional characteristics should provide enough information for a qualified manufacturer to understand what must be produced and what actually matters.


When that information is incomplete, suppliers are forced to fill the gaps. One supplier may interpret an unspecified dimension one way while another chooses something completely different. The first production run may work because an experienced machinist asked the right questions, while the next run fails because those decisions were never formally captured. What appears to be a supplier inconsistency may actually begin as ambiguity in the design package.


This becomes especially important when sourcing changes. Verbal explanations, email threads, and undocumented agreements do not transfer cleanly from one factory to another. If successful production depends on knowledge that exists outside the controlled drawings and specifications, changing suppliers introduces unnecessary risk and makes repeatability much harder to achieve.


Clear documentation also improves quoting. Suppliers can evaluate tooling, processes, inspection requirements, and manufacturing difficulty more accurately when the design intent is explicit. Without that clarity, manufacturers may either price additional uncertainty into the quote or discover requirements later, creating revisions, delays, and unexpected costs.


A strong sourcing package should therefore be capable of standing on its own. Supplier questions will always be part of manufacturing, but they should refine the process rather than uncover fundamental design intent. The less critical information that depends on explanation, the easier it becomes to reproduce the same product across production runs, factories, and suppliers.
